Cross-border care

Do you need urgent care abroad (in a country that is not the country where you live)? In that case, your foreign care provider will want to know in advance whether you are insured. Show them your card with the EHIC on the back. During your stay in another EU Member State, the EHIC will entitle you to reimbursement of the costs of medical care as though you were an insured resident of that country.

In an emergency, call ANWB International Assistance (Alarmcentrale)

If you need urgent care abroad, you should always call ANWB International Assistance at (071) 582 54 44. They will advise you and, if necessary, stand surety for the costs of the care. In this way, ANWB guarantees that the foreign care provider is paid.

Your health insurance card with an EHIC is valid in the following countries

Is the country that you are visiting not in the list? Then you will not need to show your health insurance card.

Australia Ireland Norway
Belgium Iceland Austria
Bulgaria Italy Poland
Cyprus (Greek part) Croatia Portugal
Denmark Latvia Romania
Germany Liechtenstein Slovenia
Estonia Lithuania Slovakia
Finland Luxembourg Spain**
France* Malta Czech Republic
Greece Netherlands Sweden
Hungary Northern-Ireland Switzerland

* France, including Guadeloupe, French-Guyana, Martinique, Reunion, St. Pierre, Miquelon
** Spain, including Ceuta and Melilla

In several countries, the foreign care provider may ask for a certificate of insurance drawn up in the local language. This is known as a 111 Form. If necessary, ANWB International Assistance will provide this form.

How are the costs of care paid to the foreign care provider?

  • If you show your EHIC health insurance card, you will not have to pay the medical costs yourself first and claim them afterwards from us.
  • Sometimes however you do need to pay the costs of care up front.

    • Do you participate in group insurance offered by an employment agency? If so, your employer will be able to claim the invoice.
    • If you are not insured through the employment agency, you can claim the invoice using the Claim Form for Medical Costs Incurred Abroad.

Care abroad or in your home country

If you live abroad and work in the Netherlands, your Dutch healthcare insurance policy also entitles you to receive care in your home country. This is only possible if your home country is also a treaty country (see Treaty countries | International secondment | SVB). You can use form S1/E106 to notify a healthcare insurer in your home country that you have taken out a Dutch healthcare insurance policy. If you live in the Netherlands, the S1/E106 form has no use abroad.

What care are you entitled to with form S1/E106?

You can use form S1/E106 outside the Netherlands or in your home country to show that you are entitled to receive care. The reimbursement will cover the care provided according to Dutch standards. This can mean that not all costs incurred in the home country will be reimbursed, or only reimbursed in part. If you need a prescription, a referral or prior written permission from us for certain care in the Netherlands, this condition will also apply in your home country. You do not need prior written permission for medically necessary care. By ‘medically necessary care’ we mean unforeseen care that cannot reasonably be postponed until you have returned to the Netherlands.
