About basic healthcare insurance

Basic healthcare insurance is compulsory in the Netherlands. The government decides what types of healthcare are reimbursed under the basic insurance policy. This is the same for all healthcare insurers. The difference lies mainly in the choice of care providers and the level of the reimbursements. The basic healthcare insurance policy covers the costs of, among others, general practitioner and hospital care, medicines and patient transport.

Excess and AV-ZEM supplementary insurance

If you receive care covered by the basic healthcare insurance policy, you must pay your excess towards the costs of the care. Your excess is €385.

The AV-ZEM policy also covers the compulsory excess of €385. This means that you will not have to pay any invoices for your excess. In other words, no uncertainty, no hidden costs. This supplementary insurance is only available under group insurance via an employment agency that is affiliated with ZEM.
